Sports glasses: protection is a whole-pair decision

Name the hazards first

Protection is a system: the lens must resist the relevant hazard, remain retained in the frame, cover the needed area and stay positioned during movement. A contact lens corrects vision but does not act as an impact shield. Everyday spectacles, sunglasses and sports protectors should not be treated as interchangeable just because each can have a prescription.

A ball, racket, another player or flying debris creates different demands from reading at a desk. ABDO recommends discussing sport-specific eyewear and impact-resistant materials. Ordinary everyday spectacles should not automatically be treated as protection for a contact or racket sport.

Fit it with your equipment

Our suggested fitting visit includes the helmet or other equipment you normally use. Ask the dispenser to check retention, comfort and the complete product’s suitability for your activity. Confirm any applicable organiser or venue requirements before purchase.

Plan water sports separately

Prescription swimming goggles can provide an alternative to wearing contact lenses in water. CDC advises removing contacts before swimming. Ask which goggle options match your visual needs and remember that ready-made powers and a custom prescription are different choices.

Inspect after an impact

Keep the maker’s instructions for inspection, care and replacement. If the frame or lenses are damaged, seek advice before continuing to use them as protection. No eyewear can promise that an injury is impossible, and a significant eye injury needs medical assessment.

A worked example

Describe the actual sport and equipment before choosing: a ball impact, flying debris and pool water present different problems. Ask for the applicable complete-product rating and a demonstration of secure fit with any helmet. For swimming, consider prescription goggles; ordinary contact-lens wear does not solve the water-exposure problem.
