How to clean glasses without damaging the coating

Check the instructions for your pair

Dust can contain hard particles. Pressing a dry cloth against a dirty lens can drag those particles across the surface, which helps explain why the preparation step matters as much as the cloth. Coatings improve particular properties but do not make lenses immune to abrasion or inappropriate chemicals. Cleaning spectacles and disinfecting contact lenses are entirely different processes.

Start with the lens and frame maker’s care directions. ZEISS describes lukewarm water with a little pH-neutral washing-up liquid, followed by gentle drying with a microfibre cloth, as an option for spectacle cleaning. Special frame finishes may need different care.

Avoid rubbing dirt into the surface

A shirt sleeve or tissue can carry particles that scratch a lens. Keep a clean lens cloth and use a compatible cleaner when needed. A hard coating improves resistance but does not make a lens scratch-proof; polishing a scratch away is not a safe home repair.

Storage is part of care

Use a protective case when the glasses are not in use and keep them away from prolonged heat, such as a hot car dashboard. For recurring haze, peeling or cracks, ask the dispenser to inspect the pair rather than scrubbing harder.

Keep the two care routines separate

This article is about spectacle lenses. Contact lenses require their own prescribed disinfection system and must be kept away from water. Our practical suggestion is to store spectacle cleaner separately from contact lens products so the bottles are not confused.

A worked example

After a dusty walk, follow the lens maker’s instructions to remove loose dirt before gentle cleaning with an approved product and a clean suitable cloth. A cloth left loose at the bottom of a bag may itself carry grit. If the lens stays hazy after proper cleaning, ask whether it is residue, scratches or coating damage rather than scrubbing harder.
